Turtlenecks have never impressed me much until now. Gone are the days of the thick, constricting turtleneck sweaters I used to wear as a girl in private school. I’d have to wear them out of necessity during the winter to keep myself warm and abide by the uniform policy, and I almost always wore them with white chunky, cable knit stockings. Needless to say, there was nothing attractive about that look. But, fast forward to today, and I’m putting a different spin on it. With a slimmer fit, this casual grey turtleneck by L.L. Bean Signature provides much-needed warmth without adding any bulk. Here, I’ve worn it with an olive green utilitarian jacket, fitted black jeans, and black suede Mary Jane block heels. Altogether, I have an easygoing, polished outfit I can wear on various occasions.

While I usually wear this turtleneck to work with a tweed skirt, I decided to do something new and created an off-duty outfit that’s comfortable yet cute enough to wear on casual date, a weekend outing or just a walk in the city. Now that it’s getting colder outside, I often reach for this type of sweater because I can layer it under other pieces and avoid carrying my bulky long coat. Aside from wearing the turtle neck by itself or under a lightweight jacket as I did here, you could also wear it under a blazer, vest, poncho, or cape. The great thing about it is its versatility, which makes it an easy staple in my closet.
